Humans have always laid claim to being the one species on the Earth that can make a decision based on something more than their basic instincts like food, shelter or companionship. They can make decisions that affect them years down the road, such as by choosing what field to receive a college degree in or how to begin saving up for retirement in 40 years today.
Humans can choose, but who is really making those decisions? The simplest answer is that the people involved are the ones doing the decision-making. They’re carefully weighing their choices and deciding the best outcome.
Scholars, scientists and all kinds of people can tell you what choice you’re going to make before you make it. A marketer is the one profession that makes a living from knowing what you’ll choose and why you will do it. They study habits of people like you and treat you like the rats in a maze where the only cheese that you’ll find is the kind that they’re trying to sell you. It may hurt to realize it, but the concept of ‘free choice’ is merely an illusion when it comes to what companies try to sell you.
